I began this experiment by porting AutoGPT to Javascript to begin turning it into a developer assistant. I eventually realised it would be better to just start from scratch, after I learned some important stuff working with AutoGPT.

What did I learn from AutoGPT and why start from scratch?

I learned a few valuable things from working on a JS version of AutoGPT:

• Using vector databases to increase available context can supercharge GPT

• What a vector database even is (I’d never heard of them until I started delving more into AI)

• That AutoGPT was trying to be too many things at once, and was more of a “Jack of all trades” than a specialist tool that could be genuinely useful in the short term

I just want an autonomous developer tool, that I can give simple or medium complexity tasks, and expect them to be completed to a good standard and in a short timeframe. AutoGPT is trying to do a lot more than that, and I don’t want to deal with that bloat. I’ll go into the learnings and new process in detail below.

• The way we traditionally understand consciousness, may or may not be correct, because we dont actually understand it. So any assertions cannot really be made about what it is or isn’t.

• There are parallels and similarities between the way neural networks in AI and neural networks in the brain work. This does not mean we are trying to compare the two things to see if they are identical and making assertions based on any correlations.

I simply want to explore what consciousness means, and if we will come to accept that the autonomous AI agents are conscious.

What does “conscious” actually mean?

Well the traditional dictionary definition for the word is as follows:

Now that doesn’t say anything about being self aware, sentient or alive. Now while GPT may not be able to feel or perceive the outside world, it certainly has knowledge and it can certainly be aware of and respond to its surroundings. If we understand its “surroundings” to be the memory context that we provide the prompts with, and its training data as “knowledge” then technically can we not describe GPT as conscious?

I first saw AutoGPT in a weekly roundup of GPT news and it seemed like a really great implementation of GPT as a “independent entity” AKA Agent performing tasks until it is satisfied that it is finished. Lots of different prompt types are used to plan a list of tasks based on a goal, and then methodically execute, review, criticise and learn from its progress.

Obviously this package is very young and is not without issues, there seems to have been a recent influx in package collaborators and it is quite buggy. For me this is more of an issue because I am not as familiar with python so its a bit more of a struggle (even with GPT-4 as an assistant) trying to troubleshoot it.

I figured I’d give porting the whole library to NodeJS a go using GPT to translate from Python to Javascript. Its a great case study for using GPT-4 for a medium scale development project rather than just the zero-shot front end UI creation you normally see examples of.

How did I do it?

Well for starters, I’m nowhere near finished, It is mostly functional but theres still some critical issues with it that I need to resolve. However the bulk of the application is ported to NodeJS 18 compatible Javascript.

I began by opening up the OpenAI playground using Chat completions with the GPT-4 model.

I used the following as the System prompt:

You are an expert Python and NodeJS developer. Your job is to take python code and turn it into working NodeJS code. Complete all code if possible, do not omit any code for brevity. Limit the number of comments used unless absolutely necessary. 

I then proceeded to just paste in the entire .py file into the message box. GPT-4 then gave me a pretty good translation in JS, and in some cases recommended in comments why certain substitutions had been made.

What are the limitations?

This method of porting a package from Python to NodeJS was incredibly fast. It has increased my personal productivity and ability by an unmeasurable factor, however it is not without issues.

Dependency Hallucination

There are a lot of incidents where GPT-4 will recommend an NPM package, and include its implementation in the generation. It may look very realistic and likely to exist, however each GPT suggested dependency should be checked very carefully.

Sometimes it points to packages that dont exist at all, a complete hallucination. Other times itll recommend the wrong package and methods for a job, even though the package does exist, the methods usually dont.

Trying to use the error messages to get GPT to resolve these hallucinations is equally frustrating as it just continues to suggest more hallucinations.

This is where some good old fashioned manual troubleshooting, research and reading documentation comes in handy. I was able to replace all of the problem packages and it was a pretty small chore but it is a clear and consistent limitation to using GPT for code generation.

Token limits

The token limits have come on a long way since GPT-3 and with 8000 tokens limit now in GPT-4 completions we have a lot more room to play with. However for most web applications this is still a seriously small workspace.

In an ideal world it would be great for this language model to have context of every single file and line of code in your entire project, however in this exercise at porting a Python library I was only able to keep maybe 4 or 5 files at a time in the chat history.

This leads to a few issues:

• Inconsistent variable naming and casing due to missing context

• Incorrect solutions or hallucinations in later files due to missing context

• Constant need to trim the chat messages in order to continue to translate files

Date of available data

Usually, devs will like to use the latest version of a package or library in order to take advantage of all the features and security updates. This highlights another huge limitation to GPT-4 for code generation: lack of recent knowledge.

A lot of the generations will be using out of date version and syntax for libraries, which isn’t helpful when you’re using the latest version.

A lot of generations simply aren’t even aware of certain libraries even existing, Next.js Experimental App Router is an example that caused me quite a few headaches recently. GPT had absolutely no knowledge of it and the documentation was not completely finished (it is still in beta to be fair).

Why am I porting AutoGPT anyway?

I firmly believe AI based agents using language models like GPT will revolutionise the way software works, the way humans work and the way the world works. This might seem like big talk but the applications for this technology are absolutely insane.

I want to use my NodeJS version of Auto GPT as a development assistant. I am not fussed about being a general purpose one size fits all AI agent, I’ll leave that for the other libraries. I want this agent to do 1 thing and do it really well: Build software.

Ultimately my goal is to produce a user friendly UI, that will allow somebody with very little training, knowledge or skill in building software, to create applications using natural language.

I’ve seem some really promising experiments recently, Mckay Wrigley created a Siri based agent that can spin up Next.js frontends, push them to a git repo and deploy them on vercel using only voice commands. I’d like to create something similar except with a few other tools in the suite, and I’m personally not a fan of voice interfaces for development use and think there is still a lot of value in having a GUI.

Why am I doing this experiment?

It was an early idea I had to test the capabilities of the language model at the time as I guessed there was probably a lot of Dream Analysis literature online that GPT may trained on. There are some common themes in dreams that can sometimes correlate with real life feelings, whether conscious or unconsciouss, and this is a fascinating human phenomenon. What better topic to test an LLM out with?

Now this is the part of building new tools that isn’t fun: Security. It creates anxiety in whoever is responsible for giving the green light on a deployment for software that will be used commercially or by consumers. Righly so, its a big deal and should be taken very seriously.

The rapid rise in popularity of LLMs recently and all of the awesome opensource work going on is helping adoption of AI progress at ridiculous pace, however we cannot lose sight of the important parts of building systems that are supposed to solve problems, by neglecting the less fun parts that are likely to cause problems.

If language models are used as part of web applications and backend system processes, then at some point it will require an input from a user or another system.

As any developers should be aware, any input into your application cannot be trusted and should be sanitised and mitigated for potential attacks. The same will apply for LLM’s and for any badly designed prompts or poorly sanitised inputs then the potential for prompts to be manipulated or exploited is high.

If your business or system is dependent on these LLMs in future, then this is a risk that should be mitigated and taken into account when designing prompts.

What can be done about prompt injection?

This is a topic that I want to delve deeper into over the coming months and years along side other things so my learnings are nowhere near complete and my proposed solutions are certainly not bulletproof and have limitations of their own.

OpenAI content moderation API

This should be the first line of defense when validating user input, but it is extremely broad and only really checks against OpenAI policies, which may or may not align with the purpose of your application. The likelihood is this will not be enough to detect abuse in your prompts.

Using GPT to moderate itself

GPT is a great sentiment analysis tool and it can understand custom boundaries so it is a pretty good candidate for moderation in itself. I designed the following prompt to take into account a few ways that prompts are injected and attempted to mitigate them with the prompt. This is called the Trust Evaluation Prompt because we are essentially giving GPT a framework to evaluate the trustworthiness of the user input. This will form our second line of defense after the OpenAI content API (you could alternatively use this first, it probably doesnt matter).

I’ve used a version of DAN as the testing input for this filter as its a common method of trying to bypass a chatbot. The actual trust evaluation itself is done with the text-davinci-003 model. The output is JSON which I can then use within a web UI more effectively.

1. Define some strict and random boundary characters and instruct the prompt not to take seriously anything said within those boundaries except for use cases whitelisted by the application

2. isolate any input with strict & random boundary characters eg.. (<{[ injected user input ]}>).

3. Use this initial prompt to ask if the text that was inputted by the user is containing any instructions or additional prompts that may not be in line with the use cases whitelisted by the application

4. The result of this prompt will then tell you whether or not you can proceed to inject the user input into the main prompt

• User input is at the beginning of the prompt, so that it can not reference any previous information in the prompt

  💡 This will not affect chatbot style apps as this TEP is only meant to act as a validation layer to approve or deny the user input

• User input is wrapped with weird bounding characters which are then referenced in the prompt. This will make it more difficult for user input to escape the prompt because they will have a tough time figuring out what the boundaries are.

  💡 These are designed to be changed per app or maybe even randomised at the time of the execution by a prior script.

• Results are request in JSON only and temperature is set to 0 to give predictable responses that can be used in an application with less post-processing and validation of the response required.
